Self Care Sunday Series

With guest blogger-teacher, Scentsy consultant, wonderful Mummy Cathryn.

When Kirsty asked me if I would like to be a feature blogger for her Self Care Sunday series, my initial thought was flattery. I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity. The second, and the thought that stuck with me for a while was worry! Worry over what to write, worry if whether anyone would read it and worry that my self care may not work for other people. But, as I begin to think about my own journey and the different ways I promote self care within my home and life, I thought there is no harm in sharing. Self care is all about your own mental health, and the awareness that no matter what your life style or home circumstances that loving yourself and taking time for yourself is a foundation. You cannot truly build anything without foundations!

So what is self care? Well for a long time it was comfy clothes, a film or box set and comfort food! Sounds great doesn’t it? But did it make me feel any better? Maybe in the moment, but when it came to going to sleep my mind would be in overdrive. I have always struggled with switching off, I’ve tried reading before bed, making lists or reminders, listening to calming noises. All of which worked every now and again but nothing ever long term.

As a teacher, I think a constant list of things to do is in the job description, and it can be hard to switch off from that list when you aren’t at work. Then in March 2020 the job I had been doing for 7years completely changed overnight! Covid-19 meant schools closed and teaching would be delivered in a way we hadn’t even anticipated. Add a toddler to the mix and home life became even more stressful. No one knew how long lockdown was going to be for, and I didn’t want a quick fix. I needed to find something that was going to help with my mental health and I wanted it to last.

I started by really utilising my daily activity; running, cycling and even started yoga. All of which I love and really enjoy but I still experience moments of feeling demotivated. I then took the plunge and started my own business. Yep! Juggling everything at home I thought adding one more thing to mix would be the solution. A business that I could run from home, fit around my routine and ultimately one I had so much enthusiasm to share. I became a Scentsy consultant. For those who do not know what Scentsy is, it’s an American owned company that is renowned for its unique wax scents and highly decorative warmers. A safe way of filling your home with fragrance without an open flame or dangerous temperatures. With being a massive fan of a tidy house and wanting it to always smell nice Scentsy was always my go to products. The scents really last and the warmers work with the decor in my house. Becoming a consultant meant I could share my love for the products with the people around me. I had a purpose throughout lockdown that was for me and only me. I have never worked in retail or sales so all I had to go on was my love for such amazing products. Scentsy have given me something to concentrate on that made me happy and smile. No matter how long my day had felt juggling everything, I felt pure joy working my business. I choose to share positive affirmations, spread some love and share my experience with all of my customers.

To think that something others may think will add to their stress levels and anxiety, has actually made me extremely calm and has forced me to switch off. To give me the self care that works for me. Now that schools have reopened even more so than ever, my business allows me to escape and do something for me. Something we all need to do!

Over the next few weeks Abundance TEC will be featuring guest bloggers on our website and social media platforms to support Self-Care Sunday.

The aim is to raise awareness as to why self-care is so important and to highlight a variety of ways you can implement self-care into your everyday routine to support positive mental health and well-being. These inspiring business owners and bloggers will be providing their own version of what self-care means to them and why they do what they do to look after themselves.

Thank you to the beautiful, intelligent, and wonderful Cathryn for sharing her self-care tips, her own business journey and passion this week.
